| John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts (or "The Kennedy Center") is located in Washington, D.C. It opened in 1971 as a living memorial to President John F. Kennedy. Designed by architect Edward Durrell Stone, it was built by Philadelphia contractor John McShain. The center is located on the Potomac River, adjacent to the Watergate Hotel. The Kennedy Center represents a unique public/private partnership. The Kennedy Center is administered by a bureau of the Smithsonian Institution, and receives Federal funding each year to pay for the maintenance and operation of the building as a federal facility under the control of the National Park Service. The Kennedy Center is a venue for the presentation of the arts with education and outreach initiatives, which are paid for almost entirely through ticket sales and gifts from individuals, corporations, and private foundations. www.kennedy-center.org/ Address: F Street, 2700 Category: theater washington dc performance venue arts
