Spiral Jetty

USA / Utah / Howell / Spiral Jetty Road
 sculpture, artwork, jetty, interesting place

Earthwork sculpture built in 1970 by American sculptor Robert Smithson. Located near Rozel Point on the northern shore of the Great Salt Lake in Utah. It was constructed of basalt rocks and earth and forms a 1500-foot-long and 15-foot-wide counterclockwise coil jutting from the shore of the lake.

The jetty is visible here, but fluctuations of the level of the lake cause it to be submerged now and then. Its rocks are coated with salt, which is an interesting sight when the jetty is exposed.

  • This place is almost impossible to get to!
  • It's not too bad to get to, though I wouldn't go out there if it's muddy without four wheel drive. Stop by the visitors center at Promontory (on the way) and ask for a free spiral jetty map. The biggest unknown for a visitor will be whether or not it's visible above the water's surface. For the vast majority of it's existence, it's been under water.
  • It is Easy to get to now. Average Level:4,200 Ft. Record Low:4,191.35 Ft. today:09/09/08:4,194.35 Ft. Only 3 Ft. from the all time low.
