Opened in 1960 as the Kauai Surf. The original wing was the western half of the southwest tower, closest to the beach. That wing was doubled in the late 1960s, and then a new rear wing was built in the 1970s, in two stages as well.
The property was entirely gutted and rebuilt in 1987 as The Westin Kauai. It was badly damaged in 1992 by Hurricane Iniki and closed.
It reopened in 1995 as the Kauai Marriott.
The hotel portion became a Sonesta in 2021 and the complex became dual-branded.
The timeshare portion of the property remains branded as Marriott, while the hotel portion was rebranded to Sonesta.
The Marriott timeshare units are in the southwest tower and the top two floors of the north tower. The remainder of the north tower and the southeast tower contain the Sonesta hotel rooms. The resorts share the facilities on the property.
Kalapaki Beach features Kauai’s only high-rise resort, a grand property with a grand pool and grand views of Nawiliwili Bay.
