Built c. 1902 by Charles W. Post as a future home gift to his daughter Marjorie Merriweather Post, who was 15 at the time. In 1905 she married Edward B. Close, lawyer, stockbroker, and son of one of Greenwich CT's founding families, and moved into the mansion. The 15-acre estate, known for its enormous front porch, had a staff of 13 during this time. They lived there until 1917, when it was severely damaged by fire. They divorced in 1919, and in 1921, the property was deeded to the Lanier family for use as Edgewood School. The National Reading Foundation of New York established Haithcox School on the property in 1956, then from 1962 to 1971, Daycroft School occupied the premises. Daycroft, founded in 1928, moved here from Stamford, but moved again in 1971 to the Rosemary Hall site.

In 1975, Eagle Hill School founded its Greenwich campus here, one of three locations now, its first campus being Hardwick, MA. It is a residential and day school for children with learning disabilities
