Coal from the Black Thunder Mine is loaded into BNSF Railway and Union Pacific Railroad unit trains at this loadout, from where it is transported to customers throughout North America. During 2007, 86,196,275 tons of coal was produced at the Black Thunder Mine, the 2nd highest in the United States. The Black Thunder Mine was the top producing mine in North America until Peabody Energy combined their North Antelope and Rochelle mines. Arch Coal, the owner of the Black Thunder Mine, is moving ahead with the purchase of the neighboring Jacobs Ranch Mine, and this consolidation will put the Black Thunder Mine back on top.
