Designed c.1908 by Charles Birge for Ranald H. MacDonald, a developer. Covering half a block each floor was divided into two residences. Most famous resident was William Randolph Hearst who occupied the top three floors eventually the top five creating "The largest private apartment in New York." Not able to expand as he liked Hearst bought the whole building. Many of the rooms were filled with Tudor and Jacobean paneling and magnificent plaster ceilings.
