Meeting House Square (Dublin)

Ireland / Dublin / Dublin
 temple, square, bar

Meeting House Square is a square in Temple Bar. On one side of it is it Gallery of Photography and another side is a stage (which is part of The Ark Theare).

There is an organis market there every Saturday and during the Summer there are films shown projected on to the wall of the Gallery of Photography. Occasionally, there are small open air music gigs held in the square.

One corner of the square is dedicated to Thom McGinty 1951-1995, aka The Diceman. Thom was a mime artist who originally came from Scotland and who became famous for walking slowly up and down Grafton Street on Saturday afternoons, wearing an outlandish costume, advertising 'The Diceman' game shop. Sometimes he would stand absolutely still and take two hours to walk the length of the street.
Thom was a very popular man and when, in 1994, ill health forced him to retire crowds flocked to the Olympia Theatre when they put on a concert for his benefit. As a touching token of respect during his funeral his coffin was carried the length of the street in which he had worked.
