Originally the Taft Hotel, designed c. 1911 by F.M. Andrews & Co. A branch of Saks Fifth Avenue opened at 996 Chapel in 1942 and later became Gimbel's. For years it served as New Haven's most luxurious hotel until being converted into apartments.
