Beautiful state park. Great fishing. Beach. Marina with boat rentals. Fantastically challenging disc golf course (one of the courses for the 2004 World Championships). Shooting range. The lake drains into Saylorville Reservoir. Originally built as flood protection for the city of Polk City, Iowa.

Big Creek has a great wooden playground that looks a little like a castle. It does require close supervision of small children because there are ways out of it onto the beach, but toddlers to upper elementary kids love the playground.
