Overpass to Nowhere

This overpass, at the northern end of Rte. 24, seemingly goes nowhere. Located in the Blue Hills Reservation, it only leads to traces of a road on the eastern side of the highway, which lead back to the Nike site. However, given its location, it is unlikely it will be torn down until it has to be, given that work would shut down this major highway between Boston and the South Coast.

  • The bridge actually connect sections of the Blue Hills Reservation. It's degree of utility is being hotly debated during reconstruction with a $4.6M price tag.
  • Actually, this bridge was built over State Route 24/Fall River Expressway in the mid 1950's.The Blue Hills Reservaion is a large wooded recreation area that was divided north to south by State Route 128 and RT 24 divided the southern section. This bridge allowed access across RT 24, which created a barrier for the fire roads and horse/ hiking trails in the area. It was a narrow single vehicle bridge that after 50 years was replaced for safety reasons.
