During 17th century the Jacob family used land here for bleaching fabrics, the area being associated with textiles.
1724 A Calico printing works established.
c1802 Bennett’s Calico Printing Mill.
1831 Edmund Littler acquired the Merton Abbey works, producing high quality silk and fine woollen printing.
1904 Liberty & Co. acquired the business, demolishing all but three of the old buildings and replacing them with new workshops. Five remain today.
1972 Liberty’s sold the premises.
1982 Fabric printing ends due to disastrous fire which closes works.
Today the buildings are part of the successful Merton Abbey Mills Crafty Market.
