This is one of three locations across Germany of the national library, which is tasked with storing a copy of every book published in the Germany language.

The Leipzig location consists primarily of two buildings, one a sprawling but normal-looking library building, and the other an imposing, windowless building without a ground-floor entrance (there is a closed bridge about three stories up).

It is also frequently called the "Deutsche Bücherei".
