This is one of the oil islands. Named Freeman, Grissom, White, and Chaffee after the first four NASA astronauts to die in the line of duty.
These are artificial islands which house oil and gas production equipment. The artificial facades are designed to disguise the facility. In fact, there are active oil wells and pump jacks throughout Long Beach, LA, and the vicinity that are hidden beneath facades, in warehouses, fake houses, and other clever hiding places. Most residents don't know they live in the middle of active oil and gas production!

There are still many "exposed" oil pumps in vacant lots and, most prominently, on Signal Hill. I disagree with the "most residents" comment above. | ||||
