Location of the original recreational residences and businesses in the area and the namesake of the original post office in the area, before the incorporation of the Resort Municipality of Whistler and the associated rebranding of the mountain/resort overall. Named because it is at the height of the divide between the Cheakamus and Green River basins, although it happens that "Alta" in the Chinook Jargon also means "here, now". Rainbow Lodge, the original railway hostelry here, was located near the lake's northern end, the Alta Lake Hotel about halfway down its western side adjacent to the railway tracks. Similarly the original youth hostel was on this side of the lake. The Alta Lake Lodge was located on its south eastern shore in what was to later become the Alta Vista neighbourhood. This was the first area of the Whistler Valley to be subdivided for private house-sized recreational lots.
