This school was one of three public elementary schools built for Washington DC black children just after the Civil War. Named after U.S. Senator Charles Sumner of Massachusetts, who fought for slave rights in DC. This facility operated as a public school until 1978. Since then it has served as a museum on public education and the repository of the DC Public School System's official archives.
