City Theater Plzen (Plzen)

The building was erected in 1899 in neoclassicist style by design of architect Antonin Balsánek as Grand (or Czech) Theater. Rich artistic decorations of facade and interior were made by famous Czech sculptors and painters, e.g. Ladislav Saloun, Frantisek Hergesell, Stanislav Sucharda, Vilem Amort, Antonin Rous, painter Augustin Nemejc, the author of main courtain, Josef Mandl a Frantisek Urban painted large pictures of ceilings and lobby and many others.
Operas, ballets, operettas and dramas has been perfomed there.
The theater was later renamed in honor of Czech dramatist and writer Josef Kajetan Tyl (February 4, 1808 Kutna Hora – July 11, 1856 Plzen), author of the lyrics of Czech national anthem "Kde domov muj" ("Where is my Homeland"), who died in Plzen and was burried in Plzen cemetery of St. Nicholas.

Major reconstruction and enlargement of the theatre was made in 1981-1985 by architect Pavel Nemecek.
