Sur Sagar Lake (Vadodara)

India / Gujarat / Vadodara / Sursagar Road
 lake, boating

At the centre of the city where the first college of music in the country took root, is Sursagar. Before you think it has a musical ring to it, the lake’s story is about Sureshwar Pandya who later became Sureshwar Desai, a tax collector in the Mughal era. Outside the walled city of Baroda, was a pond, Chandan Talav. Around 1757 AD Sureshwar Desai renovated and excavated it. He built earthen ‘ghats’ with embankments. The pond was then named after him, Sursagar. Later King Malharrao Gaekwad made ‘pucca’ embankments. In the 90s, remains of an ancient temple were found from its bed. Presently a huge statue of Lord Shiva stands in the centre. (text courtesy :www.comfortrealtyindia.com/content.php?id=9&catid=3&sub...

Vadodara Municipal Corporation has constructed a large statue of Lord Shiva in the middle of this lake. This Lord Shiva statue is in standing posture and is 120 feet tall. The special lighting arrangement on this statue gives a tremendous effect during the late evening and night hours.
