The ancient fisherman's village of Claddagh (An Cladach), meaning 'stoney beach', lies on the western shoreline in the estuary of the River Corrib. The village was once a settlement of white washed thatched cottages, in 1855 there were 329 houses in the village. These were demolished in the 1930s and replaced with modern houses
