boulder (geology), tourist attraction
Balanced Rock, a large boulder that gives the illusion of being precariously balanced.
History:
The Garden of the Gods didn't always include the Balanced Rock area. Until 1932, it was a privately-owned tourist attraction operated by Manitou Springs photographer Paul Goerke. Goerke had purchased the property for $400 in the 1890s, He built a high solid fence around the famous rock, so that it couldn't be seen even from a distance without paying admission.
In 1932 the City of Colorado Springs paid Goerke $25,000 for the property, and added it to the Garden of the Gods.
