About the Kuala Lumpur YMCA
The YMCA is a world-wide Christian, Ecumenical, and Voluntary Movement for the women and men with special emphasis on the genuine involvement of young people. It seeks to share the Christian ideal of building a human community of justice with love, peace and reconciliation for the fullness of life for all creation.
Affirming the Paris Basis, as the ongoing foundation statement of the mission, the Kuala Lumpur YMCA was incorporated on 27 October 2005 with 39 founding members. The object and purpose of our Association is to seek to:
Transcend all divisions and barriers of class, race, nationality and political opinion; and
Provide young people with opportunities for the full development of the whole personality – Body, Mind and Spirit.
Serving the Youth and Community
To meet the above objectives, the Kuala Lumpur YMCA initiated a wide range of activities including sports and fitness programmes, children and youth activities, martial arts, educational and enrichment courses, senior citizens and deaf development programmes. The many-sided purposes is the result of deliberate attempt to provide a wide range of points of contact with individuals – to meet the needs of members and community in their daily life and to express our concerns for them.
We strive to be the choice Not-for-Profit Organisation (NPO) in Malaysia in providing these services characterized by love, justice and peace; and prioritized our work based on the analyses and participation of the community so that our movement can help to bring about the desired changes.
YMCA Logo – The Red Triangle
As indicated above, YMCA is defined as a Christian, Ecumenical, and Voluntary Movement and it is open to the public. Basically, it functions as a Christian social service organization to provide the community with opportunities for full growth of the whole personality – Body, Mind and Spirit. This symmetrical development of the entire person is symbolized by the popular inverted red triangle.
“The Red Triangle” is an American contribution. Luther H Gulick, who taught at Springfield College of Physical Education, invented the “Red Triangle” in order to provide the rational and philosophical orientation to place physical education in its proper perspective in the YMCA programmes as a whole, which otherwise had so far emphasized only the spiritual and mental well-being of young people.
Gulick believed that the equilateral triangle was an appropriate symbol for portraying the work of the YMCA, because it indicated the three-fold nature of man – body, mind and spirit. He said:
“The triangle stands, not for the body, or mind or spirit, but for the man as a whole. It does not aim to express these distinct divisions, but to indicate that the individual, which he may have different aspects, is a unit…Thus with the individual man, he is not a body and a mind and a spirit, but a wonderful result of their unions, something entirely different from any single aspects of himself. The triangle stands for the symmetrical man, each part developed with reference to the whole, and not merely with reference to itself.”
If we look closely there is “Red Triangle” is a double inverted triangle. The large triangle stands for the Godhead: that of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. This represents the complete co-operation and unity between them. The second triangle stands for the trinity within men –that of the body, mind and spirit. Here is where the greater part of our work fits in that of developing the life of a person into fullness of growth.
