Help Disco is an actual discoteque right on Copacabana.
The name Help gives you an indication of what it's famous for, much as the Japanese have the euphemism of "rescue" to mean financial assistance to a young lady for certain favours, the women who frequent this disco are typically interested in some financial assistance or "help". This creates a unique experience for the men as they would be outnumbered by the women who are vying for their attention. Certainly not as blatant nor crass as a "whore house" but this club is known for certain pursuits. It's not uncommon for men who are in Rio on business to take their latest novice co-worker to this club simply for the shock value of having so many beautiful women milling about, of course such groups of men would rarely take it further as certain pursuits are too personal to be done in the presence of co-workers (I did loose one co-worker that I brought to this club for the shock value, he just disappeared with a woman while we weren't looking, he was a bit more relaxed the next day and kept asking if we could go back).
The existence of such clubs is really more a comment on the economic disparity that Brazil faces, even the 18 year old girls are typically single parents with a 4 year old child to support. If it is just physical gratification that you are seeking, then there are better and safer avenues in Brazil such as the "Termas" where the girls are at least required to be tested (whole other story about how those operate...), the clubs are like any club, unregulated, for the most part, the women are just after a reasonable exchange of services for finances but there is the potential that one may try to liberate more of your belongings then would be reasonable. Even worse is that you could wind up with someone who's underage, the local laws are not very lenient and you don't want to experience their penal system. Having said that, the women I've met there are perfectly fine people just a little desperate for cash.
I believe that they have a much healthier attitude toward sexuality then in America and applaud them for their openness. Still, it's disheartening to see so many people barely able to make a living.

The food there isn't bad, perhaps overpriced when compared to the rest of Rio but quite affordable and the balcony of the neighbouring "boate" which is only accessible through the disco, overlooks the beach. There's a restaurant outside where a lot of people hang out waiting for the disco to open (overpriced but good food).
It's an interesting place to visit just to see that such places exist but there are better and safer ways to scratch that particular itch. Also, keep in mind that if you do befriend a girl and see her repeatedly, the expectation is that you would marry them to help them immigrate to a new life. Of course, that may be a good thing, but from what I've seen, it's the Brazilian women who wear the pants in their households... |
