Established in 1832 and named after founding father, inventor, politician and diplomat Benjamin Franklin. Improvement and revitalization of the then run-down park was carried out in 1935 by the Public Works Administration (PWA). The PWA was a New Deal program that operated during the Great Depression between 1933 and 1944. The program provided funds to private contractors to complete large-scale projects proposed by states as a means of economic stimulus.
