In south India(Tamil Nadu) there were 63 great shaiva saints(Nayanmars - meaning Devotees of Lord shiva). Among these 63, three saints were prominent viz., Appar, Sundarar, Sambandhar. They made pilgrimage to many shiva temples and sang hymns on the deity. The hymns on each deity is called padigams(collection of 10 songs). Like wise when they reached Srikalahasti(Andhra Pradesh), they had a vision of 5 north indian temles and sang the padigams on those deities from Srikalahasthi.Still many of the compositions of these saints is not tracable. This is one among the 275 holy shiva stalas sung by them. The composition of three saints is collectively called "DEVARAM(Garland to God)" Deities with reference to Devaram: God: Kedhareswara Goddess: Kedhara Gowri Also this is the 4th among the 5 north indian temples sung by them. The others being Srisailam(Andhra Pradesh), Mount kailash(refered to in hymn as Thiru kayilayam), Gowrikund(refered to in hymn as Anegathangavadam) and Mount Neelkanth(refered to in hymn as Indhira Neela parvadham) Also this is one among 12 Jyotir Lingams Category: petra padal stalam
