Initially a joint operation involving Maple Leaf Mills, Monarch Foods (Unilever) and United Co-operatives of Ontario, the mill and terminal were built in 1976 with $9 million in Federal government assistance. The 20 ac. UCO terminal was used to unload and store soybeans and canola brought in from the west. It was then transported by conveyor to the Maple Leaf Monarch mill built on the northerly 48 acs. Maple Leaf Mills sold its interest to Archer Daniel Mills in 1985 and UCO followed in 1991.
The plant crushes soybeans and canola for use in various foods ingredients and animal feeds. It is capable of processing up to 2,000 tonnes per day.
