Homewood utilized a former church as the central core of their new library. Since the 1980s, patrons and staff have reported hearing what sounds like church meetings and Sunday School classes from the lower level, which is where the meeting rooms for the church were. The supposed paranormal activity has been written about and was featured in a local TV report in 2010.
In 2010, the building received energy efficiency upgrades as part of an Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant program sub-grant from the State of Alabama. The grant installed 15 new energy efficient heat pumps, which is expected to save the library thousands of dollars a year in energy costs.
