Location of Argentine Exocet Missile Launcher (Stanley)

Falkland Islands / Port Stanley / Stanley
missile, historical layer / disappeared object

At 06:26hrs on June 12th, 1982 Argentine forces on the Falkland Islands fired a single Exocet missile from a heavily modified truck trailer at this location at the HMS Glamorgan steaming some 18 miles offshore, the first such use of the Exocet missile in it's history.

The Exocet impacted the HMS Glamorgan in her stern and though skillful maneuvering by her Captain saved the ship a direct impact, the missile ricocheted off her Stern plating and into her hanger and caused heavy damage, 14 injuries and 13 deaths.

With the successful proof of concept launch of a land based Exocet, the Argentinean military planned to install several similar launchers around the Falkland Islands in order to deter British Navy shore bombardment missions. However rapidly advancing British troops were able to secure Stanley two days later, ending the Falklands War.
