I used to spend many a summer day at good old Dickerson Quarry back in 1972-76. We didn't call the rock "THC" Rock, but rather "Beetle Rock" in honor of the Fab Four. And smoking pot was always a must. Maybe it was a younger generation that called it that? Or maybe it was just another group of "utes" like ourselves, but just had their own name of it. And, number 14 was named, or so we thought, by nearby the Bealsville Fire Department. We had heard that #14 was the name of their fire department precinct, and that one time, a group of those firemen came out and with climbing gear, rappelled down and painted their number on it. But, I like the sound of the explanation better. Adds more to the story.
Now, I used to dive off of number fourteen all of the time, and what a rush that was! But I didn't like it all that much because of those rocks you had to miss. Even though I was always far enough out to miss them, I would have my concentration divided between "missing those rocks", and keeping my dive form in order. Consequently, I had a few bad dives where I whipped my neck under, or had my head a little too high and the water would feel as if it had cut the top of my head off.
My favorite dive was the "55" which was straight across from Beetle/THC Rock. That one you had to climb straight up the face and also beware of the copperhead snake that lived back in a fairly wide crevice. I used to climb and dive that cliff all day long. Oh to be a kid again! I heard that the place is totally off limits these days, and is owned by a group of police officers who make sure to keep people out. Anyway, nice to find this place here on the Net.. |
