The museum was founded in 1912 by Professor Al. Barcacila, initially near Traian High-School. It was started in 1926 in a wing of the actual building, with the purpose of completing the image of the ruins of the Roman fort Drobeta and the archeological site dating from Roman and medieval times.
History section: There are 50, 000 exhibits dating from the later Paleolithic until 1945. The most sensational exhibit is the Homo sapiens dated 8 000 BC, discovered at Schela Cladovei. A vast room displays vestiges of ancient and medieval Drobeta: collections of arms, coins jewelry, pottery.
Natural Sciences: An exhibition of flowers and fauna specific to the region of the gorge of the Danube, many geological proofs and a fascinating aquarium with different species of fish from the Danube.
Ethnography and Folklore: It exhibits aspects of the rural civilization in Mehedinti, astonishing national costumes, samples of interior decoration of the rural houses, pottery from Sisesti and other objects specific to the traditional occupations, as well as a traditional room from Ada Kaleh, the island on the Danube which was submerged when the dam was built. The annual visiting rate is 50, 000 people.
