place with historical importance, NRHP - National Register of Historic Places, interesting place, bridge, railway bridge

Large bridge built in 1854 located on the original Norfolk and Western main line alignment crossing the Appomattox River. Bypassed by a newer "low grade" belt line in 1916, the old main line was used until 2006 when declining coal traffic made maintenance of this bridge unsustainable and the whole line segment was abandoned.
On April 6-7, 1865, during the Appomattox Campaign, Confederates tried, but failed, to burn down the railroad bridge and the wagon road bridge adjacent to it over the Appomattox River, to delay Union pursuit.
The bridge is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
