Blue Ridge Mall opened in 1958 as an open-air two-level mall (one above and one underground) anchored by The Jones Store (though this was not original to the mall), Safeway, Montgomery Ward, and JCPenney. In the early 1970s it was enclosed and renamed Blue Ridge Mall. JCPenney built a new location and Safeway was gone by then. However, it hit hard times in the 1990s. JCPenney and Wards closed in 2000, renovation plans never materialized after being drawn up in 2001, The Jones Store left, and in 2004-2005 the mall closed. A "green" (as in, reduced carbon footprint) Wal-Mart Supercenter was built on the site. Today, the site has Lowe's, Walmart, and a variety of smaller stores and restaurants.

  • Turning out to be a pretty nice Shopping center hopefully.
  • See http://www.uer.ca/locations/show.asp?locid=23153 for some pics of what it used to look like.
