The Marine Monument (Savannah, Georgia)

USA / Georgia / Thunderbolt / Savannah, Georgia
Second World War 1939-1945, war memorial

In 1947 a memorial to the 24 United States Marines from Chatham County killed in World War II was erected at Bull Street and Gaston Street, at the entrance to Forsyth Park. Later plaques added the names of Marines from Chatham killed in the Korean and Vietnam Wars.

Bronze plaques and an emblem of the United States Marines (earth, anchor and eagle) are attached to one large piece of white Georgia Marble, 4 feet 3 inches high, 3 feet 8 inches wide and 8 feet long, in a low, simple rectangular shape, resting on a larger base of similar stone. The design was surely made with the view of Forsyth Fountain in mind. The monument actually sits near the curb on Gaston Street. The monument was dedicated on Armistice Day, 11 November 1947, two years after the end of World War II.
