The historic bridge itself is not within the park; it is managed by Ministry of Transportation and Infrasturcture as a historic site. Part of the old highway and what are perhaps some of the best preserved sections of the original Cariboo Waggon Road (yes, that's how it was spelled in those days) can be found just east of the bridge.
The original Alexandra Bridge, named after Princess Alexandra of Wales, was a 300 foot (91 m) suspension bridge completed in 1863 as part of the Cariboo Waggon Road. When the Canadian Pacific Railway was completed in 1885, the wagon road fell into disuse, and the bridge became derelict. Then, with the increasing automobile travel, a new suspension bridge was constructed on the same site (using the original 1863 abutments) in 1926. This second bridge served until 1962 when it was replaced by the current highway bridge, and in 1974 was designated a provincial historic site.
