Monkwearmouth Colliery was also known as Pemberton Main Colliery.
The first shaft was started in 1826. It took seven years of digging down through rock and water before reaching coal at a depth of 1080 feet, or more than 300 metres. The second shaft was started in 1841.
The shafts were deepened until by 1846 it was the deepest coal mine in the world.
There were 4 shafts sunk. The winding towers were demolished in 1994.
Over the years more than 260 men and boys died down these shafts.
No shaft markers remain on the surface to remind people.
