Malvan

India / Maharashtra / Malwan /
 town, taluka headquarter

Tehsil Malvan, District Sindhudurg, Maharashtra.

Archeological records and other documents date Malvan town and its surrounding areas, since the times of Ashoka (250 B.C.)

The Maratha warrior, Shivaji, took control of this town and area only in 1658, and in 1664 built the Sindhudurg fort across the present day harbour.

After the Maratha empire was decimated to the Satara and Kolhapur kingdoms, Malvan was under the rule of Kolhapur.

In 1765, Malvan was taken-over, by the then, Bombay based British, under the command of one Maj.Gordon and Capt.Watson.
The current Sindhudurg fort was also captured by them, plundered, ravaged, decimated and renamed "Fort Augustus".
