Gurudongmar Lake is one of the highest lakes in the world located at an altitude of 17,100 feet (5,148 m). It lies on the North side of the Khangchengyao Range in a high plateau area contiguous to the Tibetan Plateau.
Gurudongmar Lake is primarily a pilgrimage destination for the Sikhs. During his third journey, Guru Nanak visited this place to provide support to the Karmapa Nyingmapa sects who were forced out of Tibet by the Gelugpa sect. His footprints, a water carrying utensils and a robe is still preserved in Lachen Gompa, a place nearby. There is also a gurudwara at Gurudongmar Lake commemorating Guru Nanak's visit. The lake is named after Guru Dongmar, who is popularly known as Padmasambhava.

  • A spectacular high altitude lake (altitude of 17100 feet or 5138 metres) situated in the northern most fringes of Sikkim,India in a high plateau area which is contiguous to the Tibetan Plateau. The lake remains mostly frozen during the winter season. To visit this lake , take a stopover at Lachen and get acclimatised. Being a very high altitude lake, oxygen is scarce in that region so necessary precautions must be taken. With clear blue skies in the backdrop and snow-white peaks fencing the lake boundaries the place appears truely divine, stunning and breathtaking. This place is a must see. Abhirup,Gourav,Bijan,Bamdev,Debadrita,Aditi,Para,Joy,Ambarish and Vivekananda went there on 3rd May 2008.
