The Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA), a body corporate with academic, financial and administrative autonomy, was established in 1961. Currently GIMPA is the leading management development institution in Ghana with a vision of becoming a world class Centre of Excellence for training in Leadership, Management and Administration, Policy analysis, Consultancy and Research, Distance Learning, Gender, and Development programmes. Is also provides for a discussion and resolution of important contemporary national and international issues.


About GIMPA
Setting & Location

The Institute, located some eight miles north of the city of Accra, is housed on a 150 acres high ground at Greenhill, off the Achimota - Legon road and within a stone's throw of the University of Ghana. Greenhill with its white buildings and surrounded by green vegetation and the Achimota Forest Reserve, is a sport of striking and restful scenic beauty. On clear days it commands in one long panoramic sweep, a view embracing the University of Ghana with the undulating Accra Plains in the back-ground, the Kotoka International Airport, part of the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission and the hills of the Akwapim Range.

Background

Currently GIMPA is the leading management development institution in Ghana with a vision of becoming a world class Centre of Excellence for training in Leadership, Management and Administration, Policy Analysis, Consultancy and Research, Distance Learning, Gender and Development programmes. It also provides fora for discussion and resolution of important contemporary national and international issues.

Vision
As a topmost Ghanaian Management Development Institution, GIMPA aims to be a world class centre of excellence for training consultancy and research in leadership, management and administration, using top class and motivated staff with state-of-the-art facilities.

Mission
GIMPA's mission is to maintain a Centre of Excellence for training in public and business administration, by continuously enhancing the capability of middle and top level executives in public and private sectors, as well as Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) both in Ghana and internationally to manage their institutions and enterprises efficiently and effectively. GIMPA's overall goal is to become the best Management Development Institute in sub-Saharan Africa, known for quality programme delivery in Leadership, Management and Administration. In line with the government's public sector reform initiatives, GIMPA is being restructured into a commercialized organisation with a new structure to meet its new mandate.

Governance
The Governing Body
The Institute is governed by the Court of Governors. The main function of the Court includes the determination of the overall policy direction of the Institute as well as oversight responsibility for institutional development and overall management.

Academic programmes are coordinated from the office of the Deputy Director- General who is also the Dean of Academic Affairs.

OBJECTIVES OF THE INSTITUTE
The main objectives of GIMPA, among others are:

To promote the study and practice of effective leadership, management and public administration;
To develop in management a greater awareness of the changing values and needs of the community and the best means of effectively responding to those values and needs;
To educate senior executives in the best ways of maintaining the vitality and integrity of their organisations and thereby assisting in the economic development of the country;
To arouse and maintain interest and participation of management in the development of the country;
To promote understanding and cooperation between governmental and other public bodies, and persons and bodies engaged in private enterprises; and
To assist Ghanaian enterprises through Consultancy, Research and Management to achieve increase in productivity and profits and more effective cost control.

The Institute accomplishes its objectives through various programmes of activity, namely, training, research and consultancy, workshops, seminars and symposia, a library service and publications and extra-mural activities. In addition to its current portfolio GIMPA has developed new products and services to meet with the new expectations of the public sector.

NATIONAL INSTITUTION WITH AN INTERNATIONAL FACULTY
GIMPA is an associate member of Association of African Universities. It collaborates with local and international institutions such as the School of Administration at the University of Ghana, Legon, the Management Development and Productivity Institute (MDPI), Institute of Local Government Studies (ILGS), University of North Texas, USA, Maastrich School of Management, (MSM), The Netherlands, Institute of Social Studies (ISS), The Hague, and others in training and other assignments when necessary.

The Institute has also collaborates with the African Association For Public Administration and Management (AAPAM) and other Management Development Institutes outside Ghana, particularly the West African Management Development Institute Network (
