Sedamsville was founded in 1795 by Colonel Cornelius Sedam, a veteran of the Revolutionary War. Incorporated in 1835, it contained only about 40 buildings in 1870 when it was annexed by the City of Cincinnati. The community developed after the opening of the railway yards and Fleishmann's yeast plant in nearby Riverside in the 1870s. By the eary 20th century, Sedamsville was a thiving working class neighborhood with a small business district on River Road.

Following the flood of 1937 and the realignment of River Road in the 1940's, the area lost a large part of its business district and slowly began to decline. Much of the neighborhood's housing stock is in poor repair despite plans to revitalize the area. A proposed condominum development on River Road may lead to renewed interest in the community.
