Shangaani District is Mogadishu's new city (in contrast to the old town further west), and formerly one of the city's wealthiest and most beautiful areas. Once home to many Italian expatriots and a major tourist attraction, today the area is virtually lifeless, with most of its buildings destroyed and a reputation as a dangerous area.
