Lumarzo

Italy / Ligurien / Uscio /

Small town in Val Fontanabuona at 26 Km from Genoa. The name comes from latin "Locus Martius" meaning Mars Woods (possibly a small temple to the roman god of war). During the Second World War german troops and local partisans had some fights there. It's the place of origin of the Schenone family which is spread all over the world after a migration between the 19th and 20th century. Frank Sinatra's mother (Natalina Garaventa) was born here in 1896 before migrating to the US at the beginning of the 20th century. The most famous church is the Santuario di Nostra Signora del Bosco (built where a a peasant had a vision of Mary, Jesus' mother, in 1555) located in Pannesi, within Lumarzo territory. The Town's festivity is on the second Monday of September, on San Camillo day. Country Fair is on the second Sunday of May, between Ferriere and the Bargagli tunnel, along the highway, with hundred of stands selling all kind of goods.
