Quick Stop and RST Video

This small shopping plaza located along Leonard Road just north of NJ 36 was made famous by Leonardo filmmaker Kevin Smith.

Smith, an employee at both the Quick Stop Convenience and RST Video stores in the mid 1990s, shot his first feature, an independent film simply known as "Clerks.", during the stores' off-hours, using friends and locals as actors and $27,000 of his own money for expenses.

Making a huge splash in the independent cinema genre with the 1994 release of "Clerks.", Smith continued to make bigger-budget movies, often setting and filming them in Leonardo, Red Bank, Middletown, or Atlantic Highlands, New Jersey.

Figuring prominently in "Clerks.," the stores, in particular the Quick Stop, reappeared in Smith's films "Chasing Amy," "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back," "Clerks II," and (in animated form) "Clerks: The Animated Series," with only "Chasing Amy" not featuring scenes inside the businesses.

While RST Video has permanently closed since the filming of "Clerks.", the Quick Stop remains an open convenience store. In addition to typical independent food market fare (snacks, small groceries, cigarettes, and lottery tickets), the store features novelty items from Smith's films as well as a plaque dedicated to Smith's work.

Both stores are a LOT smaller than they look in Clerks.

This is the site where the first Kevin Smith cult classic film was shot. I hope to one day make a pilgrimage to this place.

I was there last weekend. The video store is closed. The Quick Stop is open, it is exactly like it was in the movie. I heard that they want to keep it looking like it did in the movie for those of us that want to see the place. The lot across the street has a building in it now, under construction.
Enjoyed stopping in.
thank you, come again.
