film/video production studio/facility, historical layer / disappeared object

Site of BBC Lime Grove studios, home of programmes like Nationwide, Newsnight in the 1980s, and the first ever episode of Doctor Who.

A film studio was first built here in 1915 by the Gaumont Film Company. It was completely rebuilt in 1932, and then sold to the BBC in 1949.

The studios were decommissioned in 1991 and demolished. Their history is commemorated in the new streetnames Gaumont Terrace and Gainsborough Court, named after Gainsborough Pictures which made films there like "The Wicked Lady" in 1945 and "The Man in Grey" (1943).
