industrial area, mining, smelter

This is the site of the former Granby Consolidated Mining and Smelting copper smelter, which operated from 1900 until 1919. The smelter, the largest in the British Empire at the time, processed ores from the mines at Phoenix, and created two huge mountains of slag.
In recent years, Roxul Inc. has been "mining" the slag piles, utilizing the old waste material in it's Grand Forks plant to produce mineral wool insulation for home, industrial and commercial insulation (for fire resistance and sound absorption) as well as flame retardant clothing.
