Built on what was believed to be the largest site in London for an open air pool (7.5 acres) it sadly closed after the 1987 season. The replacement facility, called the Fantaseas, did not last very long and was shut after only 18 months with huge debts of £6 million. The current pool called the Larkswood Leisure Centre was opened in 2001. The original pool was built in the shape of a cross (hence the shape of the polygon).

  • My Grandfather, Edgar Sydney Moss ran the building company ES Moss that built Chingford Lido. The company was founded in 1932 so he was doing well to take on such a large prestige project so soon after setting up in business. He subsequently built a house for himself in Dennis Lane Stanmore called Larkswood, it had an integral Air Raid Shelter as it was quite close to RAF Fighter Command at Bentley Priory, Bushey Heath. As a child I can remember the framed photograph of the Lido that was on display in his office.
