This is a very old part of the city. During the 16th Century it was known as the Jewish Quarter Malta, but from the 18th Century onwards large numbers of Western Europeans settled here, and it came to be known as the Frankish Quarter (from "Franks", a common term used by Greeks in the Middle Ages to refer to Roman Catholics). Thessalonians today refer to it as Fraggogeitonia which means Frankish Quarter in Greek, or alternatively, Fraggomachalás (from Turkish Frangomahalla, as the area was called by the Ottoman Turks during Ottoman rule).
