This was the proper complex. the more brilliant standing out complex you've outlined was the palace, which I saw one time, when the manager gave us a special looksie. They'd kept it in pristine condition and looked a lot like the palaces downtown, maybe just not as old. One imagines that VIP parties took place in this upper compound, especially the 'Zanadu' type movie star-and-general studded parties that were rumored to have taken place during the dictatorship. Maybe it was here that the increasingly bad news of Kwangju was learned....
