The George Tpwn UNESCO World Heritage Site, inscribed in 2008, covers over 259 hectares of the city centre; the zone encompasses the oldest parts of the city centre at the northeastern promontory of Penang Island. The cityscape within the zone comprises rows of Chinese shophouses, the city's Little India, the Central Business District (CBD) at Beach Street and a British-built administrative precinct, as well as Swettenham Pier and a Rapid Ferry terminal that serve as major entry points for tourists.

Among the more notable landmarks within this zone include, but not limited to, Fort Cornwallis, the City Hall, Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion, the Pinang Peranakan Mansion, the Kapitan Keling Mosque, the Goddess of Mercy Temple, St. George's Church, the Clan Jetties and Chowrasta Market. The colonial-era Eastern & Oriental Hotel, a sister hotel of Singapore's Raffles Hotel, is also located within the zone. Adding to the allure of this portion of the city centre are Penang's famed street food, found along the narrow streets here, and street art pieces scattered throughout.

Property prices within the UNESCO World Heritage Site have appreciated tremendously, with investors snapping up colonial-era shophouses and buildings, and converting them into cafes, restaurants, art galleries, museums, retail establishments and co-working spaces.

  • I grew up in Penang, no matter how. Of course Penang's a livelier city with exotic multi-cultural architecture building, a good leisure place for visitors.
  • A little bit rough on public transportation, although it is herritage city, It should have proper modern transport network to avoid a lot of private vehicle to go into city center, For example, since the road cannot be widen anymore, they should build a tramway on the road and block private vehicle into city center.
