The Palau dels Esports de Barcelona was inaugurated in 1955 for the 2nd Mediterranean Games.
Events held in the Sports Palace include the 1973 European Basketball Championship, the 1986 World Basketball Championship, and the volleyball preliminaries and rhythmic gymnastics events of the 1992 Summer Olympics. During the 1980s, the RCD Espanyol basketball team was a tenant in the Sports Palace. It was remodelled in the mid-1980s.
In 2000, the Barcelona Sports Palace was adapted to better acommodate theatrical shows and renamed the Barcelona Teatre Musical. Seating capacity was reduced from 8,000 to 3,500, and the comfort and acoustic quality were enhanced.
