military, camp
UN Command post closest to the Korean Demilitarized Zone, or more accurately, closest to the Joint Security Area and Panmunjeom. Camp Bonifas is home to the United Nations Command Special Security Battalion, which pulls guard duty in the DMZ, and also in the JSA. The guards also conduct special tours of the JSA. The camp was renamed August 18, 1986 from Camp Kitty Hawk, in honor of US Army Captain Arthur Bonifas who was killed by North Korean Soldiers in what has become known as the Axe Murder Incident. Bonifas was posthumously promoted to Major.
In 2004 the camp was transferred from US Army control to Republic of Korea control.
