Urumqi Railway Station (Ürümqi)

China / Xinjiang / Urumqi / Ürümqi
train station, head house (train station)

This is the Urumqi train station. If you're travelling here by train, this is where you'll be starting from.

The old southern railway station in Urumqi was demolished in 2002 to facilitate the construction of
a larger modern building. Since the construction of railways to northern and southern Xinjiang, and the Eurasian Continental Railway Bridge, passengers using the Urumqi Southern Railway Station have increased rapidly which meant the old building could not meet their needs. The demolished building was opened in January 1963 with a floor space of less than 2,000 sq m.,but later expanded to 8,237 sq m..
The new building will have a floor space of 25,000 sq m. and cost 219 million yuan (about 26.39 million U.S. dollars). It was completed in 2003.
