The Imatra hydropower plant is built on the Imatrankoski rapids in Vuoksi. The river runs from Saimaa to Laatokka. Vuoksi is Finland’s water richest river.
The construction of the power plant began in 1922. Power production started in 1928. At first, the power plant had two turbine facilities. When the seventh turbine facilities were completed in 1952, the power plant reached its current size with an out put of 178 MW.
